IBM’s market value $ 203.5 billion nearly Microsoft

How IBM’s market value has climbed to nearly that of Microsoft, which was worth three times as much as IBM in 2000. Microsoft had a market capitalization of $203.7 billion when markets closed yesterday, compared with IBM’s $203.5 billion, according to Bloomberg data.
Microsoft, whose Windows and Office software are used primarily on PCs, lost its spot as the most valuable technology company last year to Apple Inc. (AAPL), as sales of iPad tablets and iPhones crimped PC demand. IBM Chief Executive Officer Sam Palmisano divested the company’s PC business six years ago, calling it commoditized, to invest in software and services.
IBM, now the world’s largest computer-services provider, topped Microsoft’s value in intraday trading last week. It hasn’t closed with a value above its rival since 1996, according to Bloomberg data.
IBM gained 2 cents to $168.01 at 9:42 a.m. in New York Stock Exchange composite trading, while Microsoft gained 9 cents to $24.24 in Nasdaq Stock Market trading. The companies had gained 14 percent and lost 13 percent, respectively, this year before today.
IBM has closed the gap in market value with Microsoft Corp. (MSFT), giving it the potential to become the second-most valuable technology company as its bet against personal computers pays off.

That's how much time has passed since IBMwas a bigger company than Microsoft based on market value. But that era could soon be over. Big Blue's stock has climbed 14 percent this year, putting it within striking distance of passing Microsoft's $204 billion valuation. IBM, founded a century ago, dominated the computer world until the 1990s, when Windows made Microsoft the top tech company. Yet even if IBM passes Microsoft again, it's still nowhere near today's undisputed market-cap leader, Apple.

Sony is aiming the SB model at students

Sony VAIO SA and SB laptops are refreshes of the current VAIO S line which was introduced in February this year. The specifications have been bumped up, but the design has been overhauled resulting in a slimmer, lighter notebook pc.

Despite Dell’s XPS-15z supposedly being “the thinnest 15-inch notebook on the planet”, the new VAIO SA is marginally slimmer at just 0.95 inches thick (the Dell is 0.97 inches thick).
Both models look pretty similar, featuring the same 13.3-inch display, magnesium and aluminium casing and backlit chiclet keyboard. Different colour schemes are available – the SA is available in brown, black and silver while the SB comes in a rather nice looking navy, and bright pink for the ladies.
The SA is the top line model of the two with specs including an Intel Core i7 CPU, AMD Radeon HD 6630 Graphics with 1GB dedicated video memory, optional SSD hard drive and a 1600 x 900 resolution display.
Sony is aiming the SB model at students, and as such the specifications are slightly lower than those of the SA. Intel Core i3 and i5 processors will be available in the SB models, along with AMD Radeon HD 6630 graphics and a 1366 x 768 resolution display.
In terms of chassis design, the SA and SB look extremely similar. Both are still made of magnesium and aluminum, have backlit chiclet keyboards, and on-board optical drives. However, the SA will be available in Sony vgp-bps8 battery brown, black, and silver, while the SB also gets some brighter navy and pink options. Other than the colors and the thickness, the only major aesthetic difference is the fact that the SA has a fingerprint reader nestled between its right and left mouse buttons. You see how Sony is trying to differentiate these here?
The more noticeable differences comes in specs. The SB will have Core i3 and i5 versions, which will range between $899 and $1,000. Sony lists an AMD Radeon HD 6630 graphics option for those two, but we doubt that’s included in that entry-level configuration. Sadly, the students also get stuck with a 1366×768-resolution display. The SA, as you might expect, gets higher-end parts for its $1,370 starting price. It will be available with Intel’s new Core i7 CPU, 1GB of Radeon HD 6630 graphics, SSD options, and a 1600 x 900-resolution display. Both have integrated batteries, but Sony’s still got that $150 slice battery that latches on to the bottom of the system and promises a total of 15 hours of juice. (Note that the SSD-equipped SA promises a longer runtime.) All in all, they seem like some nice rigs. Nicer than the Lenovo and the Dell? We’ll wait on the reviews to determine that.

Good tips for ensuring comfortable laptop ergonomics

Top Five tips for ensuring comfortable laptop ergonomics
-http://www. wholesaleeshop.com.au
That laptop of yours is mighty convenient, but it’s slowly killing you. Well, maybe not killing you, but it could be nudging you towards repetitive stress injury, eyestrain, and back problems.
1: Get your keyboard at a comfortable angle
Laptops used to come with little pop-out legs in the back to set the keyboard at an angle. (I’m really dating myself.) But these days, to position the keyboard at an angle, you can prop the back of the laptop on a small book or other widget.Acer eMachines D640(P321G32Mn) Laptop - wholesaleeshop.com.au
2: Make the screen brighter
Dim screens are better for battery life, but you’ll get a headache staring at a low-contrast screen for hours on end. Bring a power cable so you can plug in and crank the brightness until it’s comfortable to see.
3: Use a separate mouse
Integrated touchpads or pointing sticks are clumsy to use for extended periods. Invest in a small portable Bluetooth mouse. Likewise, many ergo experts advise using a separate keyboard, so you can position the laptop for optimum display position. This isn’t practical on the road, but you might consider it if you use the laptop as your primary PC in the office.
4: Position the laptop for the task at hand
If you’re doing a lot of typing, your wrists should be straight and elbows at a 90 degree angle, as if you were typing on a keyboard in the office. For many people, that might mean putting the laptopin your lap. But if you’re mainly reading, that’s a bad place for the screen. Instead, elevate it to near eye level. (You can put it on a stack of magazines or books.)
5: Carry it in comfort
Your laptop, mouse, power supply, and other accessories probably weigh anywhere from five to 10 pounds. Be sure to carry it all in a bag that has a wide, padded strap to distribute all that weight comfortably across your shoulder. Even better, consider a rolling case so you don’t have to carry it at all.

Google takes on e-books market – Bestlaptopbattery.co.uk

Google takes on e-books market Bestlaptopbattery.co.uk

The new online bookstore, dubbed Google eBooks, features 3 million titles, from newly released best-sellers to freely available out-of-copyright books, which consumers can store in a personal online library managed by Google and then read on any device.
“All of your library is there at anytime; any device you pick up, all your books are present,” James Crawford, the director of engineering on the Google Books team, told Reuters in an interview ahead of Monday’s announcement.
The electronic books market is currently dominated by Amazon.com, which helped establish the market with the release of its Kindle reading device in 2007 and has a roughly two-thirds share of the U.S. market, according to Forrester Research. Earlier this year, Apple entered the market, selling electronic versions of books that can be read on its popular iPad tablet PC.

Google has an opportunity to offer electronic books to a vast segment of consumers who might not have been aware of electronic books, said Forrester Research analyst James McQuivey. But he noted Google would have a better chance of unseating Barnes and Noble in the No. 2 spot selling digital books, than Amazon.
“The Kindle brand is solid and their devices are super-elegant, very cheap now, and their bookstore is second to none as far as bookstores go,” McQuivey said.
Google said its digital books are compatible with a number of reading devices, including the Barnes and Noble Nook and Sony e-reader, but are not compatible with the Kindle (save for titles in the public domain that do not rely on special digital rights management technology).
Google, whose Internet search algorithm has made it the world’s most popular search engine, has created a special algorithm to help it set the optimal price for its electronic books, said Crawford.
